Excellence in Design Award – Renovation of the historic landmark on Gercen Street, Minsk, Belarus
Buildings in Gertsen Street and Muzykalny Lane (uptown area) were erected in the 17th-20th century, while Gertsen Street itself (formerly known as Malaya Bernardinskaya, Staromonastyrskaya – which literary means St Bernard’s Street, Old Monastery Street) dates back to the 14th-15th century.
The real estate plan owes its picturesque appeal to the combination of buildings of different architectural styles, number of storeys, the choice of volume and colour.
Here, the landscape smoothly descends to the River Svisloch, which adds to the beauty of the place.
House Nr.1 – one of the oldest buildings – was built in the 17th century by architect F.Kramer (classicism). The remaining fragments of the facades and the interiors were restored along with the original design structure.
House Nr.2 was built in the early 20th century. The remaining fragments of the facades and the interiors were restored along with the original design structure. The visible surface of all bricks and the bed of the façade was cleared. The railing of the staircase was restored to match the surviving fragment.
Houses Nr. 3, 4, 5 were built in the late 18th century. The buildings suffered most of neglect in the 1980s. After engineering surveillance it was decide to preserve just a few fragments of the walls and the basement. The fragment of an original paining on the wall was carefully dismantled and granted to an art museum. We restored fragments of authentic walls, facades and certain elements of the interiors. The unique wooden and brick galleries of the courtyard façade, as well as the basement arches were restored with the help of archive materials. The walls, which were in an extremely senile state, were dismantled and restored to match the measurements taken.
